Having lived through the euphoria and the promises of political freedom in Brazil, Paulo has become disillusioned with the path his left-wing party is taking. An intern at a law firm, the young man feels oppressed at work and has difficulty maintaining steady relationships, as well as suffering from a worsening chronic gastritis, which cause him to live an unhappy life with no more expectations of a future full of big changes that he had dreamed of. One day, as he returns from a clandestine political gathering upstate, Paulo comes upon a 14 year-old native girl, with newspapers and magazines pressed against her own body, stopped in the middle of the road under heavy rain. Intrigued and feeling compelled to help her, he decides to give the young girl a lift. After this chance encounter, Paulo discovers, or makes up for himself, a new cause and a new space to transgress, as he learns more about the young girl, Maína, who resides with her impoverished family in a roadside hovel. Paulo’s involvement with the natives will lead him to bond deeply with the girl, and bring about a great transformation in both of them.
